Mirror mosaic in modern interior design
Mosaic is often used for decoration of architectural structures, external and internal space. At the expense of modern technology in our time have become available new types of mosaic masonry, which previously did not exist. One of them is a mirror mosaic.
Special features
The essence of the use of such a mosaic is that it is folded from small pieces. The mirror surface, reflecting the light and the surrounding world, has been known to mankind for a long time. Pieces of mirrors used in the creation of mosaic panels and before. For this, a mirror was suitable. If it broke, the fragments could be inserted into a mosaic decor.
With the massive use of mirror pieces in the creation of the interior, for example, in one of the halls of the palace, they were specially made to order. But mirrors, which are made for domestic needs, have one distinctive feature - fragility. Therefore, the material for a mosaic of such glass was not very suitable. Until recently, mirror mosaic was rarely used in interiors.
Modern technology has allowed to develop a mirror glass more durable than before. That is what makes modern mirror mosaic. Its individual pieces have finished edges. Therefore, the cubes reflecting light can be used in any place of the interior, the facade of the building to decorate furniture and household items.
Today, mosaic silver with rhinestones is quite popular, as well as variants with various inserts on top.
Specifications
Modern mirror mosaic is extremely durable. It is harder to leave scratches on it than on a tile. Therefore, it can be included in the interior design. Like any glass, it is inert to moisture, chemical solutions, the effects of precipitation outside the building. This is a quality material for interior decoration.
Mosaic has its own color. This is a gray neutral tone that combines with almost any color scheme in the interior.
Because of the mirror surface, the elements have reflectivity. This allows you to change the space of the room: to expand it or narrow it, depending on the location of the area filled with mirror mosaic. The mirror surface acquires the shades of the surroundings, mimicking under any styles and color combinations of the space in which it is used.
It actively reflects light, so rooms with insufficient lighting become brighter due to its use. She has the ability to reflect point sources of light, filling the space with sparks and highlights.
However, laying tiles on a flat surface should be perfect. If the mosaic is laid crookedly, the display of the surrounding world and light may be disturbed. Therefore, installation during repair is recommended to be trusted by specialists.
Species
Like any mosaic, mirror has variations. The tile has a thickness of up to 5 mm, it is thin and thick. It can be traditionally square, rectangular, elongated, six-and octahedral. There is one that is made up of pieces of different shapes, carefully selected to each other.
Today, manufacturers offer different shades of mirror tiles. Available in gold, bronze and even black. These tiles retain their mirror and the ability to reflect the world, so it looks interesting in the interior.
Since mosaic elements actively refract color, the edge design plays a huge role. It is of three kinds.
- In an inexpensive tile, it is polished. The mosaic with such a edge is slightly dull.
- Looks better and additionally refracts the light polished edge. But the most expensive and creating additional volume is the facet (beveled side face around the perimeter of the tile).
- Mosaic with such an edge is more expensive, it looks better on any surfaces (flat and curvilinear). Therefore, when choosing bars you need to pay attention to the edge.
For wet rooms, manufacturers have developed a mirror mosaic with a special coating that allows the tile to resist the effects of moisture and detergents. If it is necessary to decorate mirror surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom (bathroom wall, shower, surfaces near the sink, wall of the working plane in the kitchen), it is necessary to choose such a tile.
All existing varieties can be divided into 2 types: on the grid and without it. At the moment in the stores, you can choose a mirror mosaic, assembled in a canvas and attached to the grid. Such material is easier to mount. The presence of the grid allows you to reduce the time for tiling. No need to adjust the distance between the individual fragments of the mirror composition.
You can pick up the material in bulk and install one tile at a time yourself or entrust this business to a professional handler. Manufacturers produce self-adhesive mosaic, on the back of which has already been applied adhesive composition. It costs more than loose material. But then mount it easier. Even anyone can handle it.
Immediately before installation, it is necessary to remove the protective layer from the back of the composing fabric. This should not be done in advance so that the adhesive does not dry out. Next, you need to forcefully press the mosaic to the prepared surface and wait until the fragment is securely fastened. Adhesive composition perfectly interacts with the surface of the wall and securely fixes the canvas on it.
Smooth the unevenness of the canvas can be roller, then the mosaic will fall perfectly.
Application
Mirror mosaic has decorative properties. It is combined with various other tiles and finishing materials. It is rarely used completely on all surfaces, so strong is the glow and reflection. If you cover all the surfaces of the room with a mirror mosaic, a negative impression will be created. Excess dispels attention, it breaks the interior and overloads it.
As a rule, mirror mosaic combined with other types of finishes. Interacting with each other, matte colored and mirror pieces will emphasize the beauty of each other. You can also combine small cubes mirrors with other finishing materials, such as tile. In this case, the sections of the planes and fragments that reflect the light, will be a great addition to the interior. They will organically fit into the modern industrial style of interior design, complement the classic and restrained interiors. The brilliant light reflecting mosaic will emphasize the sophistication of the classics.
Mirror mosaic in the interior can be used as any glass. It can finish any surface of the room - the floor, ceiling, walls, furniture, work areas and walls of bathrooms, use as edging, decorate household items. Durability and inertness to chemical effects make it possible to apply mosaic in bathrooms and kitchens. It can complement the interiors of living rooms, hallways and bedrooms.
Like any small mosaic, a mirror is easily mounted on flat walls and fits well on any curvilinear shape, unlike a real mirror, which is flat. It can be laid out in fragments, vertical or horizontal stripes, independent tiles.
To cover curved surfaces you need to choose the smallest elements. Then it will be possible to most accurately repeat the curvature of the base.
Separate use of brilliant pieces - mirror panels. This does not mean that the entire surface should consist only of mosaic. Such panels are a combination of matte and mirror surfaces. For example, a floral pattern or a leaf motif made of mirror pieces can be placed against a background of matte white ceramic. Such panels look spectacular and expensive. If you want to create an image on the wall of the bathroom or living room, you can choose it ready in the store. You can order the masters, who will develop an individual drawing and collect the image together.
Do it yourself
If you wish, you can create your own mosaic of pieces of the mirror. But this process requires adherence to a certain technology. First you need to find a mirror that is no longer needed. Next glass cutter is necessary to cut it into pieces. They should not be too small to make it easier to fasten on the base. Next you need to sandpaper to process the edges, so that you do not cut yourself on their sharp edges. Edge should be flat and dull.
Nuances of fixation
Be sure to prepare the base (smooth, humped and dry). On the basis you can draw a pattern that will be laid out of the pieces of the mirror. In order to fix the mosaic, “liquid nails” glue is applied to the base and gently press down the decorative elements. Glue for ceramic products is contraindicated, as it negatively affects the surface of the mirror, corroding it from the back side. Be sure to observe the size of the seams, which is not more than 5 mm.
After that, you need to wait 3 hours until the mirror fragments adhere well. Then you can apply grout between the seams of a light or white shade. Dark colors will look bad with shimmering trim elements. The spatula should be rubber, so as not to damage the fragile glass. Be sure to remove excess grout in the joints.
After 5 hours, when the grout is dry, you can polish the mosaic with a soft cloth to make it shine.
