Yacht lacquers: key features
Previously, yacht varnishes were used to finish the framework of wooden yachts. Today this material is actively used for exterior and facade decoration of houses. The main features of the coating are high moisture resistance and excellent protective functions.
Specifications
Initially, the purpose of yacht paint mixtures was to treat the surfaces of water transport from wood. The use of such material says a lot about its performance. This is an excellent resistance to water and weathering. In the manufacture of such mixtures, manufacturers impart high technical characteristics to the paintwork material.
The composition of yacht varnishes can not be called environmentally friendly: it adds harmful substances (methylbenzene and xylene). Methylbenzene (also known as toluene), when combined with oxygen, can enter the human body through the organs of the respiratory system.At high concentrations of toluene in the air, poisoning can occur. Xylene is equally harmful to humans. This component enters the body through inhalation of vapors, as well as through skin pores.
Poisoning with this chemical is more dangerous to the body than methyl benzene. This material should be used with particular care for interior decoration, taking into account the presence of hazardous chemical components in the composition of yacht mixtures. Outside of the premises, toxic substances (methylbenzene and xylene) do not pose a great danger.
Recently, paints and varnishes have appeared on the construction market, which are only designated yacht, but have a different composition without harmful substances.
Advantages and disadvantages
Yacht varnish has its advantages and disadvantages. He is not afraid of direct contact with liquids (even with a high content of salts). Highlight the main advantages of such coverage:
- resistance to fading;
- resistance to most chemicals;
- long service life;
- small consumption;
- high strength;
- protection from fungus, mold, rotting;
- abrasion resistance.
This coating:
- not afraid of large mechanical loads;
- emphasizes the beauty of natural wood;
- dries quickly.
The main disadvantage of compositions for yachts is their toxicity. Other disadvantages of this solution include an unpleasant odor. In addition, poor quality varnishes have a yellowish tint.
Kinds
According to the degree of gloss, yacht paints are matte and glossy. Matte coating is less susceptible to dirt, it is almost imperceptible dust. Glossy surfaces create a more dramatic finish, but even minor defects will be visible on them. The basic classification of yacht varnishes takes into account the composition of the material. Mixtures can be made on alkyd, urethane-alkyd, acrylate basis.
Alkyd coatings are among the most sought after buyers. Most often, such a material has a low cost due to the content in the composition of cheap organic solvent white spirit.
This material is not recommended for internal use because of the high content of harmful substances that are released into the air during the entire period of coating operation (on average 5 years).
Urethane-alkyd counterparts were manufactured specifically to cover structures inside buildings. The amount of organic solvents and other harmful substances in such yacht varnishes is reduced. Special plasticizers prevent the active release of toxic substances into the air. The resulting coating is elastic and resistant to temperature extremes, which allows the use of such a material for heated floors.
Acrylate paint material is more expensive than other types of yacht varnishes. This modification is not intended for processing the outer part of the water transport hull. The composition is water-soluble and not particularly resistant to various negative environmental factors. Acrylate blends are ideal for interior decoration.
Application area
In addition to processing the internal and external hulls of river and sea vessels, yacht varnishes are widely used in everyday life. This composition is intended exclusively for wooden structures. To create a more reliable coating and protect the wood yacht varnish can be applied over the bitumen composition. Yacht paints can be used for processing furniture.It is important that the wooden furniture was outdoor, not located inside the premises.
When applying the composition should be borne in mind that the yacht solution lays a rather dense layer, so the number of layers should not exceed three. Otherwise, the processed product will look careless. For the treatment of wood products located indoors, it is recommended to use special yacht mixtures that contain the minimum amount of toxic substances. Such compositions are excellent for application to the floor of wood. Yacht varnish should be used to process the facade of the house. Solution is ideally suited for lining, significantly improving its operational characteristics.
Manufacturers
The performance of the resulting coating depends directly on the quality of the yacht varnish used. When buying a suitable composition, it is recommended to give preference to products of well-known and proven manufacturers.
Tikkurila
Firm Tikkurila is one of the world leaders in the production of paint and varnish coatings. Tikkurila produces several modifications of yacht varnishes, including matte, semi-matte, glossy and semi-gloss coatings.Tikkurila Unica Super is a urethane-alkyd varnish. The material can be used for painting wooden structures outside and indoors. The varnish has a high level of wear resistance and fast drying. The mixture is produced in containers of 0.225, 1, 2.7 and 9 liters.
The material has a fairly high cost, which is justified by its good quality.
SPE "Rogneda"
The Russian company "Rogneda" is a major supplier of building and finishing materials. The range of manufactured goods is quite high and regularly increases due to the constant development of new materials. NPP "Rogneda" produces yacht paint products under the brand Eurotex. The composition is used to form a protective layer, as a decorative coating of wood structures inside and outside buildings.
The material has a high resistance to precipitation and mechanical loads. In addition, the coating is not subject to scratching and cracking.
