Roman curtains in the kitchen
A bit of history
It is believed that Roman blinds were invented in ancient Rome. Their variety can be called roll. Interestingly, the cut and the mechanism of the curtains are so perfect that more than 2000 years have passed since their inception, but they have not changed their appearance in any way. The changes affected only the fabric, added additional decor.
The appearance of curtains of this design was due to the flourishing of the Roman Empire. In those days, homeowners whose windows faced the streets suffered from a huge amount of dust raised by horse-drawn carriages. There was no glass on the windows, so it was not possible to protect your home from such an unpleasant phenomenon. The heat also caused inconvenience.
Resourceful Romans began to curtain their windows with large pieces of cloth dipped in water. Wet fabric at the same time prevented the penetration of dust and kept cool in the room.
Over time, the curtains have become more beautiful, and their design has improved.The women of Rome loved to decorate their houses with frescoes and mosaics. Of course, the curtains have become an integral part of the decor. The fabric used was striking in colors and prints. Of course, the richest people in Rome had the most beautiful and expensive curtains.
Roman curtains in the kitchen are the embodiment of elegance for all their brevity and minimalism. They look neat, easy to care for them, which is important for the kitchen.
Construction mechanism
Main elements:
- Cornice. Often made of plastic.
- Cloth made of fabric, fastened to the eaves with a special "tape-adhesive tape".
- A lifting mechanism that collects the fabric in horizontal folds. It can be a rotary-chain (ideal for heavy fabrics), rope-lifting, have electronic control.
- A special chain that drives the entire structure.
- Weighting in the form of strips. Placed at the bottom of the curtains.
The curtains can be fixed on the entire window opening or on each sash separately, if the window is large.
Modern design in 2017 - new items in the interior
RImskie curtains can be compared with blinds. However, textiles look more comfortable.
The practicality of this type of curtains makes them indispensable for the kitchen.You can easily set the desired length, providing the kitchen with the necessary level of illumination. Plus, this functionality is important if you have a fluffy kitten living at home, who during his games likes to climb higher and make unpleasant puffs on the fabric. Raising the curtain to the desired level, you will block the access of the fluffy prankster to the blind.
Modern Roman blinds are divided into three types:
- Cascading. These are very beautiful curtains, which even in fully uncool form form folds and drapes. They will blend perfectly into the interior of the living room or bedroom.
- Classic. Have a simple design. In uncool form they represent a smooth fabric sheet covering the entire opening of the window. Folds are formed in the assembled state. Ideal for children's room and kitchen.
- Frameless. Their feature is the absence of hinges. They can be considered the simplest form of Roman curtains that can be made independently.
To choose the right curtains for the kitchen, you should follow the simple rules:
- Whether it is ready-made curtains or you decide to purchase the fabric and sew them yourself, you need to measure the window opening.At the same time, if the curtain will be located in the opening itself, then the fabric length should be reduced by 2-4 cm and width by 2 cm. If the curtain is located in front of the window opening, then in this case, you should vice versa, choose a fabric so that its width exceeded the opening by at least 10-20 cm.
- When choosing a fabric, choose the one that consists of both synthetic and natural fibers. It will be easy to look after such curtains, and they are not so quickly soiled, as curtains from natural fabrics.
Fabrics based on synthetic fibers are also permissible for the kitchen. They are easily erased and maintain long-lasting color saturation.
- Roman curtains must necessarily match the design of the kitchen and the color scheme of its interior. Light curtains, made of thin fabrics, suitable for small kitchen size. Pastel shades visually make the room bigger. If a print is applied to the fabric, it should be slightly noticeable so as not to make the design heavier.
If the windows of the kitchen are facing the south side, then curtains made of thick fabric will help to get rid of the summer heat.
Designers offer interesting new items that will help turn the kitchen into a cozy place to gather family for a cup of tea.
Combination with curtains, lambrequin
Roman curtains are perfectly combined with the curtains.Will cheer up the headsets, consisting of single-colored curtains and Roman curtains with a light pattern in bright yellow colors.
Combining different textures of fabrics, you can achieve a stunning effect. The translucent Roman blinds, curtains of tulle or organza, thick curtains, pelmets - all this looks harmonious, despite the large number of components. Tulle is grabbed with a fabric holder to form light folds so that the whole structure does not look flat.
Lambrequin will wonderfully complement a large window. An interesting solution would be to use several Roman floral curtains. In order for the lambrequin to be noticeable and not to turn the window decoration into one “flower” mass, its longer fabric stripe must be monophonic. This technique will favorably emphasize the beautiful folds of the lambrequin and relieve the print.
Lambrequin does not have to be cumbersome and fanciful. On the kitchen window of a small size, dense monotonous fabric of Roman curtains and light, gathered in folds, organza with a pattern of leaves, “fit together” perfectly.
Lambrequin can add lightness and chic if it is made of a transparent material.
Textured Fabrics
Fabrics with relief, despite the brevity, look fashionable and stylish.
Asymmetry
Receiving asymmetry adds a touch of sophistication. As a rule, for this is used pelvic or light organza. An additional canvas is placed on top of the Roman curtains, shifted to one side and grasped with decorative cords to form folds. An asymmetrical lambrequin with an abundance of folds looks luxurious, but it is not suitable for a small kitchen.
Striped print
The peculiarity of the striped fabric is that it not only translates into reality interesting design solutions, but also visually adjusts the size of the room. Roman curtains with horizontal stripes will make the window wider. Accordingly, the vertical bar will “pull out” the window vertically.
The curtain in a two-color strip looks concise and strict. If you want to make the kitchen bright, then choose a fabric from several colored stripes.
Bottom decor
The peculiarity of the Roman curtains in their simplicity, but additional decor to them is quite applicable. Fluffy pompoms, fringe and even rhinestones look very cute. The bottom of the transparent curtains can be decorated with small tassels.The most important rule of such decor is the small size of the elements that are sewn onto the edge of the curtains.
Roman curtains allow you to create a cozy kitchen interior in a variety of styles.
In order to arrange the window of the kitchen in the style of Provence, use cotton or blended fabric. Ribbons that play the role of a lifting mechanism look very organic.
Adherents of modern design can afford high-tech curtains. It should be remembered that the interior of this kitchen should be restrained, and the curtains should not have a pronounced texture. As an option - a translucent canvas with a frame of a more dense fabric.
Country style is the embodiment of comfort in the kitchen. For his creation fit Roman blinds with a floral print, in a cage, in a strip.
How to do it yourself
For the manufacture of Roman blinds, you will need items that you can easily buy in hardware stores and boutiques for needlework:
- Fabrics bought in the store: basic and lining (if there is a need for it);
- Velcro tape, the length of which corresponds to the width of the Roman curtains;
- Bars / slats with a diameter of 0.5 cm made of wood or plastic. In comparison with the width of the curtains, they are shorter by 3 cm.A total of 7-8 such rods will be required;
- Rings made of plastic, the diameter of which is 1 cm. They are needed for threading cords in them that ensure the lifting of the canvas;
- Nylon cords - 3 cuts. To calculate the length of each, you need to sum up the double curtain length and its width;
- Plank weight product;
- Finishing border;
- Wooden beam (5 cm x 2.5 cm), performing the function of a cornice. Its length corresponds to the width of the curtains;
- Additional auxiliary material (hooks, screws, nails);
- Stapler.
Initially, it is necessary to measure the window opening and add on the allowances: the lateral parts of 5 cm, 10 cm in the upper and lower parts. Fabric after washing can "sit down." therefore Before you begin cutting, it should be wetted in warm water, dried and ironed. Next, using the table, we determine the number of folds of the future curtains. Mark them, as well as the location of the rings, dotted on the wrong side of the fabric.
Lateral edges and bottom twice bend and hem.
The bar on which the curtain will be mounted can be painted or wrapped with a cloth. In the second variant, a stapler is used to fix the fabric on the eaves.The tape-velcro is fixed on a bar with a stapler. The second part of the tape is sewn on the upper edge of the curtains. At the same stage hooks are attached so that the eaves can be fixed on the window.
In order to weight the curtain, on the bottom of the curtain should be made and drawstring. It will turn out a pocket where the special level is inserted.
On the seamy side, a finishing border is sewn forming the drawstring into which the plastic rods are inserted. In this case, one edge of such pockets is sewn, and the other is not. This is done so that the bars can always be pulled out before washing the Roman curtains. Plastic in this case is an ideal material. These rods will not catch on the fabric and will not spoil the look of the product.
Plastic rings are also placed from the inside and sewn by hand. Stepping back 5-10 cm from the side of the curtain, sew the extreme rings.
Now the resulting construction with velcro fastened to the bar, which serves as the eaves and pass through the cords ringlets. We begin the procedure with the lower ring. We extend the leftmost cord through the middle cord and pull it out of the rightmost ringlet. We do the same with the middle cord.As a result, all three cords will be on the right side of the curtains. They need to tie a knot.
Connect the cords in one can be simple: weave them into a pigtail.
Now the wooden curtain rod with a curtain can be fixed on the window. The curtain is ready. A hook should be nailed on the side of the window onto which the cords will be wound and fix the height of the curtains.
Roman blinds - the perfect kitchen decor with a balcony. In the heat in the lowered state, it will keep cool and create a cozy atmosphere. Plus, the curtain can be fixed on the door itself. This makes it easy to open the balcony door. It will not be necessary to move the fabric sheet back, as happens with traditional curtains.
Another advantage of the Roman curtains for the balcony door is the ability to set different lengths of canvases that will look very stylish and impressive.
