How to apply hammer paint on metal?
For decorative coating of metal elements used special hammer paint. Its feature is the unusual texture of the surface of the product after drying the composition. Also, this paint is able to well hide the defects of the metal surface. To achieve the desired effect and the desired aesthetic appearance of metal elements, it is necessary to properly paint.
Specifics
This type of paint got its name because of the special appearance of the painted surface. After drying of the coloring composition, the metal elements look as if they were struck by a heavy sledgehammer or hammer. Often this type of paint is called blacksmith.
The composition of the coloring coating includes epoxy, acrylic and alkyd-styrene base. The specific decorative effect is created thanks to the auxiliary components: small fraction glass, silicone oil and aluminum fine crumb. The paint also includes special silicones that make the painted surface water-repellent.
Paint on metal of hammer type is produced in banks or special spray cans of various capacities.
Kinds
Hammer paint can be of several types:
- Nitroemal (NTs-221). The most affordable. It is used mostly for interior decorating, as it performs the function of a decorative paint coating only. Does not possess water-repellent and protective properties, is subject to corrosion.
- The enamel is molotkovaya (ML-165). It can withstand high heating temperatures (up to 130 degrees). Due to its styrene base, it has a high degree of adhesion to the metal surface. This compound can be applied over rust. Suitable for interior and exterior use.
- Enamel on epoxy base (EP-1323). Combines the functions of priming the surface and its decorative coloring. Able to withstand high temperatures, has high anti-corrosion performance. Most often used for painting gates, details of art forging, cars.
- Hammerite Hammer Enamel (produced in the UK) one of the most expensive. After drying of this coloring composition, a film with high protective properties is formed on the metal. This coating completely protects the surface of the metal from oxidation.
Suitable for all types of work and metal surfaces. It can also be applied on rust. Application with a spray gun is not recommended.
Application
Hammer paint is most often used to paint the following products:
- Decor items made of cast iron.
- Metal structures: doors, fences, fences, gates.
- Cars, various metal parts and mechanisms.
- Structures made of steel and other metals: pipes of various sizes and purposes, beams and supporting structures, weather vanes, metal fastenings.
- Furniture made of cast iron and metal.
- Decorative accessories.
- Production machines, equipment.
In addition to directly metal surfaces, hammer paint can be applied to glass, tile, plastic, wood.
Work
Paint of this type can be applied with a brush or roller. Some types of coloring composition are sold in special spray cans.
It is desirable to apply the coloring composition on a horizontal surface. This means that it is desirable to remove the vertical surfaces (door, gate) and ensure their horizontal position. If this is not possible, you should choose a hammer paint with high viscosity and curing speed to avoid smudges.
Procedure:
- The surface on which the paint will be applied should be well cleaned from dust, debris and other contaminants. It is also important to remove any greasy or oily traces from the surface.
- Stir the paint thoroughly. In the dye composition during storage precipitates, it is necessary to bring the solution to a uniform distribution of particles and elements in it.
- Apply the coloring compound evenly. It should be applied quickly enough, as it quickly sets and thickens in the open air.
- After applying, you must wait 30-40 minutes to freeze the applied layer.
- Another layer is applied to the surface with a frozen layer.
- Then the algorithm repeats: after applying a layer, a break is made, then the surface is again covered with paint.
- It is usually required to apply 2-3 coats.
Tips:
- Apply the coloring composition with a hammer effect need with a fur roller. Foam roller paint can eat up.
- For painting gates or doors in a vertical position, it is better to use a spray gun. This device sprays the paint with microdroplets, which ensures fast drying and no smudges.
- You can control the color decorative effect. For example, taking one color as a basis, select different elements of the structure with another color, causing it last.
- Full drying of all layers occurs after 24 hours. Before the expiration of this time, it is necessary to exclude mechanical impact on the painted surface.
- You can not work with this dye composition in conditions of high humidity or temperature. If the work is carried out indoors, it is necessary to ensure continuous sufficient ventilation.
- Glossy surfaces before applying hammer paint is better to sand in order to achieve a slight roughness.
- If the product you are going to paint is new, then take care to carefully remove the factory grease. Fatty and oily dirt prevent the adhesion of the coloring composition to the surface.
